Black Forrest Cake

Jessica Toevs

My go-to birthday celebration cake! It's easy to make and super tasty with chocolate, homemade whipped cream cheese filling, and cherries!

Cake Ingredients

1 package chocolate cake mix

1 package instant pudding mix

2 eggs

1 cup water

1/2 cup oil

1 can cherry pie filling

Filling Ingredients

8 oz. cream cheese, softened

2 cups homemade whipped cream (or cool whip)

2 cups powdered sugar (more if you prefer a sweeter filling)

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350F. Prepare 2 8 inch cake pans - spray with nonstick spray, then line with parchment paper. OR do 1 single layer 9x13 bake pan, no parchment paper lining.

  2. Mix cake and pudding mixes with eggs, water, and oil. Add 1/2 cherry pie filling and mix. Evenly divide the batter into the cake pans, or spoon all into a 9x13.

  3. Bake for 30 min. if in the cake pans, for the 9x13 between 30-40 minutes. Watch the cake, it is done when toothpick inserted comes out clean.

  4. Let the cakes cool. While they are cooling, make the filling by mixing all the ingredients until smooth. Place first cake on a cake stand. Cut a little off the top until it is even. Use filling to cover the top, then pipe filling around the edge of the cake. Flood the enclosed piped filling with half of the remaining cherry pie filling.

  5. Make the top of the 2nd cake even by cutting a little off the top. Place on prepared first cake. Repeat the filling, piping, and flooding with remaining cherries. Cover and refrigerate to store!
